Government Taxes and Church TithesGreetings, allow me to focus on the above subject today. Since March 2020 when Churches among other congregational activities were halted by the government to combat the covid 19 pandemic, the Church and the House of Clergy has been facing a lot of criticism, bad-mouthing and ridicule just because of reminding its members and the general public that it is necessary to continue paying their Tithes and giving other offerings to the Church and supporting the Clergy ie their Pastors and Priests. This onslaught has come from the electronic, print and social media as well as from some Christians and non-Christians. This has prompted me as a Christian, a Scholar as well as your Church Minister to shed some light on this subject so that you do not disconnect your source of blessings and breakthrough based on untruths or hyped and negative social or media influence. Every human being lives under numerous authorities but two of them are very key. These are the Heavenly Authority which is a Divine Government and the Earthily Authority which is a human Government led by a human being like a President, Governor etc.
Government Taxes As a citizen of your Country, you MUST pay the Government taxes. Kindly note the word ‘MUST’. It is your obligation as a citizen to pay your taxes whether you like it or not, whether you like the President and his government or not. You don’t have a choice. You must pay or face the legal and economic consequences. In fact, the Bible in Romans 13:5-7, commands you to render all men their dues and pay taxes to whom taxes are due, ie the Government. It is a command to pay taxes!!!
Church Tithes Just like the earthily Government, our Heavenly Government also commands EVERYONE to pay a Tenth of your income or produce to God. Kindly note the word ‘Everyone’. This means everybody, whether you are a Christian or not, a Church goer or not, born-again Christian or not. In Leviticus 27:30-32, the Bible says that all the Tenth of land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree belongs to the Lord. It is Holy to the Lord and it should be put into the store-house of the Lord. Just like the Government Taxes, paying Tithes every month is your obligation. You don’t have a choice. You must pay or face the Divine as well as economic and life-long consequences. It doesn’t matter how much or how long you argue against this, you won’t change the Biblical truth and the above consequences will catch up with you wherever you are. To those of you who never pay their Tithes and even those who are so much against supporting the Church Ministers and even rejoicing because Churches are now closed and the Church Ministers are suffering, kindly note that paying Tithes is not a Contract between you and your Pastor or your Church. It is a contract between you and God. If your Church Minister is suffering today because you don’t pay your Tithes and other offerings, you will be held responsible and accountable just like an irresponsible Parent who lets his/her house-hold suffer in hunger. The Bible in Numbers 18:21 says, “Behold, I have given the Levites (Church Ministers) all the Tithes as an inheritance for their Service which they serve to mankind”
Conclusion Let me conclude by reminding you that serving God with your substance makes God a shareholder in your life. Before you withhold your Tithes and offerings from the Church and Church Ministers either because the Churches are closed or because you have been negatively influenced by the media or the society, kindly remember that: “Paying Tithes is not a Contract between you and your Pastor or your Church. It is a Contract between you and God”. To those who obey this command, the Lord gives them an open heaven, rebukes the devourers in their lives and ensures that whatever they do prospers.
