Drugs: “Stop Them Before They Stop You”

1

The head of a camel is very small compared to the size of the animal. One can even be tempted to ignore it therefore ignoring the whole animal. However, if the owner of the camel ignorantly allows the camel to put its head inside the house, he will only have himself to blame because he will no longer have control over both the house and the camel.

Like wise, there is so much ignorance among the young people towards drug and substance abuse. The use of licit and illicit drugs (legal and illegal drugs) is so tempting that most of the youth find themselves hooked to them even before they know what is happening. Peer influence and the inability of our youth to make their own decisions independently are the main contributors towards this calamity.

Like the case of the camel, we give in to the temporal pleasures of drugs only to find ourselves hooked to the permanent mental, physical and social effects of drug abuse. Once you feed your body with even the smallest amount of any drug, the damage, however slight, is always permanent. You cannot reverse it.

The most abused drugs in schools and colleges are alcohol, tobacco, bhang, miraa, cocaine and heroin in that order. Tobacco is the pathway to all the other drugs. Unless you stop the camel from entering into the house, you cannot stop it from destroying the house. Unless you STOP drugs from hooking you, you CANNOT stop them from ruining your brain, career, joy, family, friends, body and eventually your life. Let’s dare say NO to Drugs.

We must all join hands to sensitize the each one of us and the society at large about the dangers involved in drug abuse. The student fraternity is our future and we must safeguard our future. Be on the look out for the next issue of the Voice for another article on drug abuse. In the meantime, STOP DRUGS BEFORE THEY STOP YOU.
